An exceptionally medallic reverse
Lot 1396
Anonymous issues, time of Domitian to Antoninus Pius, 81-161. Quadrans (Copper, 17 mm, 2.55 g, 7 h), Rome. Draped bust of Minerva to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet. Rev. S - C Owl standing left, head facing. Cohen VIII, p. 268, 8. Kestner -. RIC II (1st edition), p. 216, 8. Van Heesch 18. An attractive piece with an exceptional reverse. Slightly smoothed and with very minor traces of corrosion, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of a Swabian artist, formed since the 1980s.

The coin was struck with an unusually small reverse die. The difference in diameter, visible in the beaded border, clearly distinguishes it from the obverse and produces a distinctly medallic reverse.
