SASANIAN KINGS. Hormizd I, 272-273. Drachm (Silver, 27 mm, 4.20 g, 3 h), Style A, mint I (‘Ktesiphon’). Draped bust of Hormizd I to right, wearing diadem and crown with great korymbos on top; thick tufts of curly hair at the back; two ribbons rising from behind the head and two emerging from the base of the korymbos; one pellet above and one below the hair tufts; the symbol of ‘frawahr’, the guardian spirit of kingship and the emblem of the royal treasury, on the right shoulder; legend along the dotted rim, running anticlockwise from 11 h to 1 h: ‘mzdysn bgy ʾwhrmzdy MRKAn MRKA ʾyrʾn W ʾnyrʾn MNW ctry MN yzdʾn’ = ‘mazdēsn bay Wahrām šāhān šāh Ērān ud Anērān kē čihr az yaz(a)dān’ (‘The Mazda-worshipping Lord, Bahram, King of Kings of the Iranians and Non-Iranians, whose essence is from the gods’ in deteriorated Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar flanked by Hormizd I, raising his right hand, and an attendant wearing a mural crown and holding up a diadem; to right and left, ‘NWRA ZY – ʾwhrmzdy’ = ‘ādur ī Ohrmazd’ (‘Fire of Hormizd’ in deteriorated Pahlavi). Göbl type I/1. SNS II, type Ib(1)/2b(1). Nicely toned. Minor porosity and die cracks, otherwise, very fine.
