SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 16.91 g, 3 h), circa 450-440. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙ-ΟΝ Diademed head of Arethousa to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins. Boehringer 581 (V289/R385). HGC 2, 1311. Nicely toned and of fine style. Slightly rough and with minor traces of corrosion and faint cleaning scratches, otherwise, nearly very fine.
