Seljuks. Great Seljuk. Jalal al-Dawlah Malikshah I, AH 465-485 / AD 1072-1092. Fals (Bronze, 33 mm, 10.17 g, 9 h), AH 478 = AD 1085/6. Within a circle, ‘al-sulṭān / al-muʿaẓẓam Abū / al-Fatḥ Malik / Shāh’ (‘The Great Sultan Abu al-Fath Malik Shah’ in Arabic); citing the ʿAbbasid caliph al-Muqtadi bi-amr Allah (AH 467-487 / AD 1075-1094) in the margin, ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh Muḥammad rasūl [Allāh al-Muqtadī bi-amr] Allāh amīr al-muʾminīn’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. al-Muqtadi bi-amr Allah, Commander of the Believers’ in Arabic). Rev. Partly off-flan and illegible Arabic legends in the central circle, containing a blessing formula (?) in favour of a local governor (?), Abū Saʿīd; in the margin, the mint and date formula of which only ‘sana thamān wa sabʿīn wa arbaʿa miʾa’ (‘in the year 478’ in Arabic) is legible. Cf. Album 1677. Apparently unpublished. Some areas of weakness, deposits and flan faults on the edge, otherwise, nearly very fine.
