Carinus, as Caesar, 282-283. Antoninianus (Silvered bronze, 22 mm, 4.16 g, 6 h), Ticinum, 282. M AVR KARINVS NOBIL CAES Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Carinus to right. Rev. PRINCIPI IVVENTVTI / VXXI Carinus, as prince of the youth, standing left in military attire, holding baton in his right hand and transverse spear in his left; to right, two standards. Cohen 108. RIC 184 var. (unlisted officina). Venèra -. Very rare with the spelling KARINVS. Light deposits and with very minor traces of corrosion on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Kurt Zimmermann (* 1937) of Winterthur, long-serving numismatist at Schweizerische Kreditanstalt and Leu Numismatik, privately acquired from Münzen & Medaillen AG in December 1973.


In contrast to the more common coins of Carus inscribed KARVS, those of his son Carinus bearing KARINVS are much rarer. The present specimen is undoubtedly among the best-preserved examples known.
