A triple-clashed reverse die
Lot 1973
Gallienus, 253-268. Antoninianus (Bronze, 19 mm, 1.79 g, 12 h), Rome, 267-268. IMP GALL[IENV]S AVG Radiate head of Gallienus to right. Rev. DIANAE CONS AVG / Є Doe walking right, head turned back to left. Cohen 153. MIR 728z. RIC 176. The reverse struck from a triple-clashed die and with minor roughness, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

Clashed dies occur when, during the striking process, no blank flan is accidentally placed between the dies. The reverse die then strikes the obverse die with such force that it leaves an impression, which can be seen on all subsequently struck coins - including our specimen. Usually, only a single impression is visible, but in this case we see no fewer than three facial outlines, indicating that the dies must have clashed three times - and yet were still put back into use.
