Gordian III, 238-244. Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 2.81 g, 6 h), Rome, 240. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III to right, seen from behind. Rev. P M TR P III COS P P Gordian III on horseback left, raising his right hand in salute and holding scepter in his left. Cohen 234. Michaux 271. RIC 81. Attractively toned and with a sharp portrait. Very minor weakness on the obverse and struck from a slightly worn reverse die, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Kurt Zimmermann (* 1937) of Winterthur, long-serving numismatist at Schweizerische Kreditanstalt and Leu Numismatik, privately acquired from Schweizerischer Bankverein at the Basel Coin Fair in January 1976.
