A rare Tremissis of Zeno from the enigmatic CONOR mint

Zeno, second reign, 476-491. Tremissis (Gold, 15 mm, 1.42 g, 6 h), Constantinopolis. D N ZENO PERP AVG Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Zeno to right. Rev. VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM / CONOR Victory advancing right, head turned back to left, holding globus cruciger in her left hand and wreath in her right; in field to right, star. Cf. Depeyrot 108/4 and RIC 920 (for issue with CONOB in exergue). Rare. Graffiti and with a few scrapes, otherwise, nearly very fine.

The attribution of CONOR coins remains one of the great mysteries of late Roman numismatics. These coins were once thought to be minted by Theoderic, but they are now believed to come from an unknown imperial mint that began producing gold coins for the Eastern Roman emperors, starting with Leo.
