Lot 1682
Galerius, as Caesar, 293-305. Antoninianus (Silvered bronze, 25 mm, 3.74 g, 6 h), Lugdunum, 293. GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS NOB C Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Galerius to right. Rev. CONCORDIA AVGG Two Concordiae standing facing each other and clasping their right hands, each holding cornucopiae in her left; in exergue, club. Bastien 494. Cohen 19. RIC 678. Rare and unusually well preserved. Extremely fine.

This rare coin forms part of a series in which the attributes of the imperial comites - Jupiter (associated with Diocletian) and Hercules (with Maximian) - the thunderbolt and the club, appear on the reverse of the coins of the two Augusti and their Caesares. In the case of Galerius, Maximian’s Caesar, the club is therefore shown on our fine specimen.
