Caracalla, 198-217. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.57 g, 7 h), Rome, 208. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG Laureate head of Caracalla to right. Rev. VOTA SOLVT DEC / COS III Caracalla, veiled, standing right, sacrificing out of patera in his right hand over tripod; to right, victimarius standing left, raising axe to strike bull standing left with lowered neck; behind tripod, flute player standing front. BMC 577. Cohen 684. RIC 205. Rare with this interesting reverse type. Minor weakness on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

The reverse legend is to be understood as Vota solvit decennalium, consul tertium - 'The vows for the tenth anniversary of rule have been fulfilled, consul for the third time', or, in a freer rendering: 'The emperor fulfilled the vows for his ten-year jubilee while serving as consul for the third time'.
