A rare Germanic victory Denarius of Nero Claudius Drusus
Lot 1305
Nero Claudius Drusus, died 9 BC. Denarius (Subaeratus, 19 mm, 3.64 g, 7 h), Lugdunum, struck under Claudius, circa 41-42. NERO CLAVDIVS DRVSVS GERMANICVS IMP Head of Nero Claudius Drusus to left, wearing oak wreath. Rev. Triumphal arch surmounted by equestrian statue right between two trophies with seated and bound captives, the rider holding spear in his right hand; above and on architrave, DE - GERM. BMC 97. CBN 3. Cohen 2. RIC 70. Rare. Nicely toned and with a fine portrait. Minor breaks in plating, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Joseph Markowitz Collection (1897-1981), brought to Israel in 1949 and kept in the family ever since.

This piece is one of the numerous subaerate denarii of Claudius’ reign, which were probably produced under official auspices. Their precise historical background remains unclear: they are often attributed to a mint in Britain (or dismissed as British imitations), though this need not necessarily be correct.
