SASANIAN KINGS. Bahram V, 420-438. Drachm (Silver, 29 mm, 4.18 g, 3 h), AW (Ohrmazd-Ardaxšīr). Draped bust of Bahram V to right, wearing an elaborate crown with a great korymbos in crescent on top; to left and right, ‘mzdysn bgy – wlhl’n MLKAn [MLKA]’ = ‘mazdēsn bay Wahrām šāhān šāh’ (‘The Mazda-worshipping Lord Bahram, King of Kings’ in Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar with ribbons, flanked by two attendants; to right and left, ‘ʾtwl – wlhl’n’ = ‘ādur Wahrām’ (‘Fire of Bahram’ in deteriorated Pahlavi); crescent to the right of the flames; to the left of the flames, ‘AW’ (abbreviation for the name of the mint in Pahlavi); on the altar shaft, ‘lʾs[t]’ = ‘rāst’ (‘true’ in Pahlavi). Göbl type I/1. SNS III/1, type Ib1/1. Nicely toned. Minor edge chipping, otherwise, about extremely fine.
