SASANIAN KINGS. Bahram I, 273-276. Drachm (Silver, 27 mm, 4.16 g, 3 h), style A/c, ‘Ktesiphon’ mint. Draped bust of Bahram I to right, wearing a radiate crown with a great korymbos on top; two ribbons rising from behind head; the symbol of ‘frawahr’, the guardian spirit of kingship and the emblem of the royal treasury, on the korymbos; along the dotted rim running anticlockwise from 11 h to 1 h, ‘mzdysn bgy wrhrʾn MRKAn MRKA ʾyrʾn W ʾnyrʾn MNW ctry MN yzdʾn’ = ‘mazdēsn bay Wahrām šāhān šāh Ērān ud Anērān kē čihr az yazadān’ (‘The Mazda-worshipping Lord, Bahram, King of Kings of the Iranians and Non-Iranians, whose essence is from the gods’ in Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar flanked by two attendants, wearing different crowns; to right and left, ‘NWRA ˗ wrhrʾn’ = ‘ādur Wahrām’ (‘Fire of Bahram’ in Pahlavi); the so-called ‘symbol of the heir’ in the upper field to the right of the flames. Göbl type I/1. SNS II, type I(1)/1ab(1a). Slightly rough, otherwise, good very fine.
