SICILY. Selinos. Circa 455-440 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 21 mm, 8.92 g, 2 h). Σ-E-ΛI-[N-ON]T-IOΣ Herakles standing right, holding club overhead in his right hand, preparing to strike the Cretan Bull, leaping right, which he holds by the horn with his left. Rev. HY-ΨAΣ The river god Hypsas standing front, head to left, holding olive branch in his left hand and phiale in his right, from which he pours libation over a serpent-entwined altar decorated with a laurel branch to left; to right, heron walking right with selinon leaf above. HGC 2, 1224. Rizzo pl. XXXI, 15 (same obverse die). SNG ANS 706 (same dies). SNG Lloyd 1243 (same dies). Beautiful old collection toning and with a remarkably energetic obverse. Struck on a somewhat short flan and with light marks and minor weakness on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.
