Lot 2345
PISIDIA. Palaeopolis. Elagabalus, 218-222. Triassarion (Orichalcum, 25 mm, 9.35 g, 12 h). ΑYΤ Κ Μ ΑΥ ΑΝΤΩΝЄΙΝΟϹ Laureate and draped bust of Elagabalus (or Caracalla?) to right. Rev. ΠΑΛΑΙΟΠΟΛЄΙΤΩΝ Zeus seated left, holding thunderbolt in his right hand and long scepter in his left; to right, eagle with spread wings standing facing, head to left. RPC VI online 5910.5 (this coin). Von Aulock, Pisidien I, 1109-1111. Very rare, only five examples known to RPC. Some light pitting and with trace deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From the Jay Smith Collection of coins of Elagabalus, ex Biga E-Auction 7, 4 December 2021, 580.

The style of the obverse bust and the obverse legend both go equally well with Caracalla, making the attribution of this piece to Elagabalus tentative.
