A unique drachm of Antoninus Pius from Stratonicaea
Lot 2289
CARIA. Stratonicaea. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Drachm (Silver, 19 mm, 2.87 g, 6 h), uncertain magistrate. ΑV ΚΑΙ Τ ΑΙΛ ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟϹ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΝOϹ Laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right; to lower left, uncertain countermark (?). Rev. APX[...] / ϹΤΡΑΤO Zeus Panamaros riding horse right, holding patera, carrying scepter over his right shoulder. Meadows, Stratonikeia -, cf. Group 5 ('didrachms' 1-2, with different magistrates). RPC IV online -, cf. 1510 and 2737 (different magistrates). Apparently unpublished and unique. Somewhat crudely struck from worn dies and with deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

This coin appears to be the third known drachm from this extremely rare series, all of which were issued by different magistrates. Unfortunately, the name of the present magistrate is difficult to read, but no other coin from Stratonicea bears the same name, making it the only testimony to his tenure.
