Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.65 g, 7 h), uncertain mint in Spain (Colonia Caesaraugusta?), circa 19 BC. Head of Augustus to right, wearing oak wreath. Rev. CAESAR AVGVSTVS / S - P / Q - R Round shield inscribed CL•V (clipeus virtutis), flanked by two laurel branches. BMC 354 var. (laureate head). Cohen 51. RIC 36a. A beautiful coin with a very attractive portrait. Good very fine.
The clipeus virtutis, a shield of valor, was presented together with laurel branches to Octavian by the Roman Senate in January of 27 BC in commemoration of the Battle of Actium
