Lot 2078
EGYPT. Alexandria. Trajan, 98-117. Drachm (Bronze, 34 mm, 20.63 g, 12 h), RY 13 = 109/10 (?). [ΑΥΤ ΤΡΑΙΑΝ ϹЄΒ] ΓЄΡΜ ΔΑΚΙΚ Laureate head of Trajan to right, with slight drapery on his left shoulder. Rev. [L] - IΓ (?) Zeus reclining left on eagle with spread wings flying right, holding wreath in its talons, holding thunderbolt in his right hand. Dattari (Savio) -. Emmett -. K&G -. RPC III -. Apparently unpublished. Flan crack, otherwise, good fine.

From the Rhakotis Collection, formed in the 1960s and 1970s (with collector’s ticket).

While this type of Zeus reclining on an eagle was commonly employed under Trajan, this coin differs from the standard typology by showing the eagle holding a wreath in its talons, perhaps referring to the Dacian Wars or the annexation of Arabia.
