PHRYGIA. Apameia. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Tetrassarion (Bronze, 28 mm, 11.78 g, 6 h), circa 240-260. KЄΛAINOC Heroically nude bust of the hero Kelainos to right, wearing taenia and with slight drapery on his left shoulder. Rev. AΠAMЄΩN Tyche standing front, head to left, holding rudder in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left. SNG von Aulock 8341. An exceptional example of this very interesting issue. Good very fine.
Strabon reports that Antiochos I Soter (281-261 BC), who founded Apameia Kibotos in honor of his mother, Apame, populated his new residential city with settlers from the nearby old Phrygian city of Kelainai. The Apameans never forgot their heritage and as this coin shows, still hailed the hero Kelainos as their ancestor some 500 years later
