A beautiful tetradrachm from Akanthos from the collections of J. Desneux and P. Mathey

MACEDON. Akanthos. Circa 480-470 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.24 g). Lion to right, attacking a bull collapsing to left with head raised; above, Θ; in exergue, stylized akanthos flower. Rev. Raised quadripartite square. BMFA 520. Desneux 52 (this coin, D50/R47). SNG Copenhagen 2. Beautifully toned and of vigorous late Archaic style, a splendid example with a very old pedigree. Nearly extremely fine.
