A beautifully toned and exceptionally attractive denarius of Augustus
Lot 599
Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.78 g, 12 h), Rome, L. Mescinius Rufus, moneyer, 16 BC. Laureate head of Augustus to right. Rev. L•MESCINIVS•RVFVS Mars, holding spear in his right hand and parazonium in his left, standing front on low pedestal inscribed S•P•Q•R / V•PR RE / CAES. BMC 86. Cohen 463. RIC 351. A wonderfully toned coin with a superb portrait of exceptionally fine style. A light scratch on the neck and with some very minor weakness on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From an old Viennese collection, formed in the 1950s and 1960s and in 3rd generation family possession since.

This is an exceptionally attractive denarius of Augustus, with a superb portrait harmonizing very well with the broad, anepigraphic obverse fields and the beautiful dark collection toning.
