In 1286, King of the Romans Rudolf of Habsburg (1218-1291) visited the city of Ravensburg and, during the festivities surrounding his visit, reaffirmed its privileges as an Imperial Free City. It is generally believed that the present coin type was designed and struck to commemorate this occasion.
