BYZANTINE. 4th-6th centuries. Weight of 6 Grammata or 1/4 Ounkia (Bronze, 23 mm, 6.63 g, 12 h), made from a double maiorina of Decentius from Treveri, 353. [D N DECENTIVS FORT CAES] Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Decentius to right. Rev. SALVS [DD NN AVG] ET CAES / TRS Large Chi-Rho flanked by A and Ⲱ. RIC 322. Edge serration on the obverse. Slightly rough and with minor traces of cleaning, otherwise, very fine.
The conversion of old coins into weights is well attested in Late Antiquity, but rarely is the undertype as well preserved, or the serration as carefully executed, as on this double maiorina of the usurper Decentius from Trier. Interestingly, the serration was applied only to the obverse, while the large Chi-Rho on the reverse was presumably deliberately left untouched
