Heraclius, with Heraclius Constantine, 610-641. Follis (Bronze, 31 mm, 13.18 g, 12 h), Constantinopolis, RY 3 = 612/3 (?). [δδ NN hERACLIЧS] ET hЄRA CON[...] Heraclius, on the left, and Heraclius Constantine, smaller and on the right, standing facing, each wearing crown with cross and holding globus cruciger in his right hand. Rev. Large M between A/N/N/O and II/I (?); above Chi-Rho; below, Є; in exergue, CON. Cf. DOC 76, MIB 160 and SB 805. Traces of overstriking and corrosion, otherwise, very fine.


This coin was struck over a follis of Phocas from Nicomedia. By overstriking coins of Phocas, Heraclius was not merely issuing new money; he was also publicly erasing the memory of the hated usurper.
