A fascinating imitative Julian II 'double maiorina' overstruck on an official maiorina of Constans
Lot 1803
Julian II, 360-363. 'Double Maiorina' (Bronze, 23 mm, 4.73 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Antiochia, irregular mint, after 363. D N FL CL [...] Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Julian II to right. Rev. [...]VB / (palm)AMTΓ(palm) Bull standing right; above, two stars. Cf. LRBC 2640 and RIC 216 (for prototype). A highly interesting imitative overstrike on an official earlier coin. Traces of overstriking and with light deposits and minor edge cracks, otherwise, very fine.

This fascinating piece imitates a double maiorina of Julian II with the bull reverse type, struck at Antioch, with the die engraver erroneously rendering the mintmark as AMT. Most remarkably, the imitation was overstruck on an official maiorina of Constans with the FEL TEMP REPARATIO reverse type, probably also from Antioch!
