Gallus as a terrifying Cyclops
Lot 1767
Trebonianus Gallus, 251-253. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 30 mm, 17.30 g, 12 h), Rome, 252-253. [IM]P CAES C VIBIVS TREBONIANVS GALLVS AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gallus to right, seen from behind. Rev. VIRTVS AVGG / S - C Virtus standing front, head to left, holding spear in her left hand and placing her right on shield set on ground. Cohen 134. Hunter 39. RIC 126a. Double struck and slightly rough, otherwise, very fine.
Such pronounced double striking on the obverse is only very rarely encountered on sestertii. Here, it has resulted in the eye from the first strike appearing on the nose of the overstruck portrait, making Gallus stare out like a terrifying Cyclops
