Very rare as an imitation of an eastern prototype
Lot 1749
Septimius Severus, 193-211. Denarius (Silver, 16 mm, 2.63 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from an eastern mint. Irregular mint, after 194. [...] SEP SEVE PERT ΛVG P M TR P II Laureate head of Septimius Severus to right. Rev. MONE ΛVG Moneta standing front, head to left, holding scales in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left. Cf. BMC 380, Cohen 330 and RIC 411a (for possible prototype). Very rare as an imitation of an eastern prototype. Somewhat rough, otherwise, very fine.
Stylistically, the piece clearly follows the eastern denarii of Septimius Severus. Such imitations are very rare. They need not necessarily have been produced in the East, however; their rarity may instead be explained by the fact that eastern denarii were much less common in the northwestern regions of the Empire than in the East and were consequently imitated less frequently
