Byzantine Weights, Circa 7th-8th/9th century. Weight of 3 Ounkia (Orichalcum, 38 mm, 80.78 g), a discoid commercial weight with double-grooved edge. Γᴑ - Γ, engraved in outline and with cross potent above and ornament below; in the center, small centering hole on a raised boss; all within inner raised circle; around, cruciform +ΘЄ-OY-XA-PIC ('Grace of God') with volutes in between; all covered with numerous decorative punches and within prominent raised outer rim. Rev. Plain except for a raised boss; all within large incuse circle. Bendall -, cf. 111 (a weight of one pound, but of cruder style). MAH 58 var (without raised boss and incuse circle on the reverse). Pera -, cf. 163 (4 Ounkia). A bold and interesting weight. Good very fine.
