CELTIC, Northwest Gaul. Aulerci Cenomani. 2nd century BC. Stater (Gold, 21 mm, 7.70 g, 6 h), 'aux objets ovoides' type. Celticized laureate head of Apollo to right, the hair in long curls with a strand falling loose before the forehead. Rev. Devolved charioteer, driving cart drawn by a centaur to right, holding reins with his right hand and long branch ending in a vexillum-like banner in his left; below, male figure walking right, holding fish in each hand. De Jersey p. 60, fig 23. DT 2142. LT 6487. Lustrous and sharply struck on sound metal, a magnificent example of excellent style and undoubtedly among the finest known. Light marks on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
