THRACE. Perinthus. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Assarion (Bronze, 21 mm, 5.65 g, 7 h), time of Severus Alexander, 222-235. IΩNΩN TON KTICTHN Laureate head of Herakles to left, lion's skin draped around neck. Rev. ΠEPINΘIΩN ΔIC NEΩKOP/Ω-N Club. Pozzi (Boutin) 2442 (this coin). Schönert 210 (same dies). Rare. An exceptional, very well pedigreed example, perhaps the finest known. Minor smoothing, otherwise, extremely fine.

The obverse legend of this coin calls Herakles the 'founder of the Ionians', thus referring to the Ionian heritage of Perinthus, which was founded by Samians in the 6th century BC.
