The Rozenobel testifies to the remarkable popularity in northern Europe of the Rose Noble introduced under Edward IV (1461-1483) of England. As one of the leading gold trade coins of the late 15th and 16th centuries, it circulated widely throughout the North Sea region and was imitated in numerous local issues. While many of these imitations were inferior in both fineness and workmanship, the Rozenobels struck by the Dutch Republic, including the present example, stand out for the exceptional care and refinement of their die engraving
