CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 272-240 BC. Diobol (Silver, 12 mm, 1.06 g, 6 h). Head of Athena to left, wearing crested Corinthian helmet, single pendant earring and necklace. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΝ Herakles standing left on his left leg, wielding club in his right hand and placing his right knee on the back of the Nemean lion, standing left, head right, whom he holds by the tail; below, owl standing left, head facing. HN Italy 1065. SNG ANS 1465-6. SNG Paris 2129-31. Vlasto 1433-5 corr. (owl omitted). Sharply struck, beautifully toned and with an unusual rendering of Herakles' First Labor. The reverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, good extremely fine.
