PERSIA, Achaemenid Empire. Time of Artaxerxes III to Darios III, circa 350-333 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 15 mm, 1.63 g). The Persian Great King, wearing kidaris and kandys, in kneeling-running stance to right, holding spear in his right hand and bow in his left; to right, countermark of star within incuse circle. Rev. Incuse rectangle with an uncertain design, possibly a relief map of the hinterland of Ephesos. BMC Ionia p. 324, 7. Johnston, Earliest, Æ 4. Mildenberg, Münzwesen pp. 25-26 and pl. XIII, 112. Beautiful earthen deposits on a dark patina. Weakly struck in parts, otherwise, about very fine.
