The highly sought-after Zurich Doppeltalers were struck between 1556 and 1695 and are consistently very rare. During the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648), they became a prized 'safe-haven currency,' particularly in the German-speaking regions hit hardest by severe inflation at the outset of the conflict. Zurich itself largely escaped the turmoil, though it eventually succumbed to inflation as well. Larger silver pieces like the present coin, however, remained unaffected, as the devaluation primarily impacted smaller denominations (cf. Hürlimann, p. 98 ff.).
