SWEDEN. Gustav I Vasa, 1523–1560. Daler 1544 (Silver, 44 mm, 28.53 g, 3 h), Svartsjö. GVSTAVS:DG•SWE - CI:GOT:WAN:REX Crowned and cuirassed bust of Gustav I to right, holding sword in his right hand and globus cruciger in his left; below, coat of arms. Rev. SALVATOR:MVNDI: - ADIWA:NOS: 15 - 44 Standing and veiled Christ with gesture of blessing and globes cruciger in his left hand. Ahlström 157a. Davenport 8697. Delzanno 20. Nicely toned, a beautiful example of this interesting issue. Minor doubling, light scratches and very minor smoothing, otherwise, very fine.

This rare and important coin is among the earliest Swedish Dalers. It was engraved by Ulrich von Nürnberg, with Hans Hansson serving as the mint master. These initial Swedish Dalers boasted a higher fine weight compared to their European equivalents.
