KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.09 g, 12 h), Knidos, circa 201. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. [AΛEΞANΔPOY] Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, monogram of EY and prow. Price 2473. Very rare. Struck on a compact fan, otherwise, very fine.

The Alexander tetradrachms from Knidos are among the great rarities in the entire series. They were struck in circa 205-190 BC and are perhaps connected to the Cretan War of 205-200 and the conquests of Philip V of Macedon in Caria.
