An extremely rare 'ceremonial' miliaresion of Constantine IV

Constantine IV Pogonatus, 668-685. Miliaresion (Silver, 20 mm, 3.94 g, 6 h), 'ceremonial' coinage, Constantinopolis. D N CONTЧIЧS P Diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Constantine IV facing , bearded, holding spear in his right hand and shield, decorated with cavalryman on horseback, in his left. Rev. Cross potent on globe on three steps between two palm fronds. DOC 20. MIB 61. SB 1165. Extremely rare and unusually attractive, an excellent example. Minor deposits, otherwise, good very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The exact purpose of Heraclius' 'ceremonial' coinage is unknown, but the great rarity and the bold and victorious types indicate that it was struck on a special occasion such as a military victory, and perhaps to be handed out to important officials and generals.
