Constantine I, 307/310-337. Solidus (Gold, 22 mm, 4.41 g, 12 h), Thessalonica, summer 330. CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG Pearl-and-rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. VICTORIA CO-NSTANTINI AVG / MTS Victory advancing left, holding trophy in her right hand and palm frond in her left. Depeyrot 14/1. RIC 174. An exceptional piece, lustrous, sharply struck, and with a splendid portrait. Thin die break on the obverse and with minor marks on the edge, otherwise, virtually as struck.
On 25 July 330, Constantine I celebrated his vicennalia with the emission of a series of multipla, solidi and fractions in the mints of Thessalonica, Constantinopolis and Nicomedia. They praise the victoriousness of the emperor, who had triumphed over internal and external foes, and dedicated his new eponymous capital just two months before, on 11 May 330.
