BRUTTIUM. Rhegion. Circa 415/0-387 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.00 g, 3 h). Facing head of a lion. Rev. ΡHΓINON Head of Apollo to right, wearing laurel wreath; behind, olive sprig. Herzfelder 92f (this coin, D55/R78). HN Italy 2496. SNG Copenhagen 1933 (same dies). SNG Lockett 658 (this coin). Weber 1119 (this coin). Beautifully toned and struck in high relief, a splendid example with a fantastic pedigree. Very minor roughness, otherwise, good very fine.

From an old British collection, ex Leu 52 ('Greek and Roman Coins from a Distinguished American Collection'), 15 May 1991, 8, from the Olga H. Knoepke Collection, Glendining, 10 December 1986, 57, and from the collections of R. C. Lockett, Glendining, 25 October 1955, 540, Sir H. Weber (1823-1918) and Charles Sackville Bale (1791-1880), Christie's, 25-26 and 30-31 May 1881, 1866.
The high Classical tetradrachms from Rhegion are among the most impressive coins struck in Magna Graecia: they combine the finest Greek style with an exceptionally high relief on the city's coat of arms, the facing head of a lion.
