LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 300-280 BC. Didrachm or Nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 7.51 g, 7 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested and laureate Attic helmet. Rev. YEΛHTΩN Lion walking right; below, N; in exergue, filleted thyrsos. HN Italy 1300. SNG ANS 1353 (same dies). SNG Ashmolean 1304 (same dies). Williams 388d (this coin, O194/R274). Beautifully toned and with a fine pedigree. Struck from a slightly worn obverse die and with two small scratches on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.


From an old British collection, privately acquired from Dr. F. Sternberg in 1966, ex Münzhandlung Basel 8, 22-23 March 1937, 50 and Cahn 75, 30 May 1932, 95 ('aus ausländischem und norddeutschem Besitz').
