Julius Caesar, 49-44 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.69 g, 4 h), with M. Mettius, Rome, January-February 44. CAESAR•IMP Wreathed head of Julius Caesar to right; to left, lituus and simpulum. Rev. M•METTIVS Venus standing front, head to left, resting left arm on shield set on globe, holding Victory in her right hand and long scepter in her left; in field to left, G. Babelon (Julia) 32 and (Mettia) 4. Crawford 480/3. CRI 100. RBW 1678. Sydenham 1056. Beautifully toned, perfectly centered, and with an excellent portrait. Struck from a slightly worn reverse die and with very light deposits, otherwise, about extremely fine.
