Michael VIII Palaeologus, 1261-1282. Hyperpyron (Gold, 27 mm, 4.20 g, 6 h), Constantinopolis. Bust of Virgin Mary, orans, within city walls furnished with six groups of towers. Rev. X/M[...] - O/ΠΑ/ΛЄ/O/Λ Emperor kneeling slightly to right, being presented by Archangel Michael to Christ enthroned slightly to left and holding book of Gospels in his left hand. SB 2243. Perfectly struck on a broad flan and with a truly remarkable obverse. An exceptional piece and certainly among the finest known. Minor graffiti and with some weakness on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
