Theodore I Comnenus-Lascaris, emperor of Nicaea, 1208-1222. Trachy (Silver, 32 mm, 4.32 g, 6 h), Magnesia, circa 1208-1212. Christ, nimbate, seated facing on square-backed throne, wearing tunic and pallium, raising his right hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels in his left. Rev. ΘЄΟΔωPOC ΔЄCΠOT Θ[ЄΟΔωΡΟC] St. Theodore, nimbate and in military attire on the right, and Theodore, bearded and on the left, standing facing, each holding sheathed sword and supporting, between them, a staff surmounted by eight-pointed star with pellet-in-circle. DOC 2. SB 2064. An exceptional piece, beautifully struck and with a wonderful rendering of the emperor. Light doubling and with minor graffiti, otherwise, good extremely fine.
