Lot 2101
CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS. Pantikapaion. Circa 370-355 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 15 mm, 2.71 g, 3 h). Bearded head of Pan with animal ears and a pug nose facing slightly to right. Rev. ΠANTI Lion crouching right within shallow circular incuse. HGC 7, 64. MacDonald 41. SNG BM Black Sea 862. SNG Stancomb 537-8. Very rare and in exceptional condition for the issue. A very attractive piece, with a ferociously looking Pan. Minor pitting on the obverse and with a light scratch on the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the Pontos Euxeinos Collection, formed in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The facing head of Pan on this coin is a real masterpiece, showing a wildness and ferocity that mirrors the proximity of its polis to the savage Skythian tribes, at the edge of the known world.
