An extremely rare hexagram of Anastasius II Artemius
Lot 411
Anastasius II Artemius, 713-715. Hexagram (Silver, 20 mm, 3.57 g, 5 h), Constantinopolis, 713 (?). D N ARTЄMIЧS ANASTASIЧS MЧL Crowned and diademed bust of Anastasius facing, wearing chlamys and holding globus cruciger in his right hand and akakia in his left. Rev. VICTOR AVSЧ Δ / CONOB Cross potent on base and three steps. DOC -. MIB 27. SB 1468A. Extremely rare and in exceptional condition. A fresh, lustrous and beautifully toned example. Minor cleaning scratches, otherwise, virtually as struck.
The extreme rarity, the great weight differences (ranging from less than 2.5 to more than 6 g) and the use of solidus dies indicates that this issue was not struck for regular circulation. It probably served, rather, a ceremonial role and may have been struck on the accession to power of Artemius in 713.
