Lot 1738
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Subargentum, 21 mm, 5.55 g, 1 h), 'Probus Group A'. Imitating Probus, 276-282. [...]A PO[...]AVG Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Probus to left, holding spear over his right shoulder and shield on his left. Rev. [...]CIH Victory driving slow quadriga to left, holding wreath in her right hand and palm frond in her left. Aurum Barbarorum II, 1900-1902. Holed twice and with a scrape on the obverse and some breaks in plating, otherwise, about very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

The style of this piece is extremely close to Aurum Barbarorum II, 1900-1902, but the legend is more blundered, revealing that it was minted slightly later. It is still earlier than Aurum Barbarorum II, 1903, however, another subargentum imitation of considerably cruder style.
