CAPPADOCIA. Caesaraea-Eusebia. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Assarion (Bronze, 20 mm, 4.71 g, 1 h), RY 14 = 150/1. AY ANTΩNЄINOC CЄBAC Laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. KAICAPЄΩN T ΠΡ APΓAIΩ / ЄT ΔI Turreted, veiled and draped bust of the city-goddess to right. Henseler 236a. RPC IV.3 online 6708. Very fine.
Considering the extremely abundant coinage of Caesaraea-Eusebia with Mount Argaios on the reverse, it is somewhat amusing that the mint felt the need to specify its location by adding 'at the Argaios' (T ΠΡ APΓAIΩ) on this issue, which lacked the city's coat of arms. This undoubtedly served to differentiate the coin from issues of other cities named Caesaraea, as beholders might not expect to see a coin from the Cappadocian Caesaraea without a rendering of its holy mountain
