Struck by the Christian minority in the East?
Lot 1761
ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. Anonymous issue. Fals (Bronze, 23 mm, 1.16 g, 11 h), a Christian post-sasanian fals, without mint and date, circa end of the 7th century-beginning of the 8th century. Imperial bust facing, draped and crowned, holding cross in his right hand. Rev. Long cross on three steps flanked by two crosses. Gyselen -. Of the highest rarity and great interest. Edge crack and with two minor holes, otherwise, very fine.

The fascinating issue is an unsolved mystery. It is struck clearly in the Arab-Sasanian pashiz fabric, but it lacks the usual design and legends, while boasting clearly Christian iconography. It was perhaps issued by the Christian minority in the East, who, as People of the Book, were generally treated favorably by the Islamic conquerors
