ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Pashiz (Bronze, 16 mm, 1.19 g), Arab Sasanian type with a 'Standing Caliph', Susa, after AH 74 = AD 693. Caliph standing facing, holding manipula in his right hand and placing his left hand on the pommel of his sword; in the field to right and left, PWN ŠM YZDT ('pad nam yazd' - 'in the Name of God' in Pahlawi); above, cross. Rev. Elaborate floral symbol in center; in the field to left, ŠWŠ ('Susa' in Pahlawi); in the field to right, LWB'K ('current' in Pahlawi). Gyselen 40. Extremely rare and very interesting. Corroded, otherwise, good fine.

This extremely rare issue copies the famous 'Standing Caliph' coinage struck by Abd al-Malik in Bilad al-Sham. Unlike the two examples published by Gyselen, which have a cross-shaped symbol above the Caliph where the bars do not connect to each other in the center, this coin has a clear cross
