CILICIA. Mallus. Julia Mamaea, Augusta, 222-235. Tetrassarion (Bronze, 27 mm, 14.82 g, 11 h). ΙΟΥΛΙΑ ΜΑΜΑΙΑ SЄB (sic!) Diademed and draped bust of Julia Mamaea to right. Rev. MALLO COLONI AM FELIX / S - C Amphilochos standing facing, head to left, holding scepter in his left hand and offering wreath to Tyche standing right, holding statuette in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left; between them, Marsyas standing left, raising his right hand and holding wine-skin over his left shoulder; to right, boar standing right. RPC VI online 7160. Ziegler 911-2. Very rare. Very fine.

The elevation of Mallus to a colonia under Severus Alexander was probably connected to a Roman offensive against the Sasanids in 232, as it was an important supply base for the army. The mixture of Greek and Latin is typical for the coinage of the city: its dies were apparently produced by Greek artists who struggled with Latin, perhaps employees from the nearby mint of Tarsus
